IMPORTANT NOTE! The background does not go into full detail on which organisations, countries and other setting elements are present in the game. This is on purpose, to make introducing new canons easier, even after the game has started.

Humanity grew proud. As technological advances progressed, we looked up to the stars. Conquest of space began - we established colonies in space, around Earth, even outposts on the Moon and other planets of the Solar System. Space pods used in construction and maintenance of colonies served as basis for the first humanoid robots.

Then, they came. About twenty years ago, it's hard to judge who was first. Monsters, aliens, strange creatures - each group different, only thing they had seemingly in common was hatred for humanity. We had to defend ourselves. Humanoid robots proved key in fighting off the enemies. At first we struggled, but we got good at it.

We got really good at it.

Because of that, large parts of humanity grew complacent over the years. Considering the extraterrestrial threats "not their problem", they turned corrupt - or even started to wage wars at each other. And in the meantime, the threat only grows stronger in time. Humanity still holds. But for how long, no one can tell.

Not everyone was willing to stand by idly and do nothing. Six months ago, an organisation rose in Earth Sphere - Divine Crusaders, a group that sought to unite nations of Earth against the common foe of alien invaders. Yet even if their goals were noble, their methods were not. They sought to subordinate others by force, and war was inevitable.

After a short but intense period of fighting, Divine Crusaders were defeated. Their leaders, Bian Zoldark on Earth and Maier V. Branstein in space, died in battle. Shu Shirakawa, a brilliant Divine Crusaders scientist who switched sides mid-conflict, betrayed Earth Sphere United Nations in the end and he and his mighty Granzon were likewise destroyed. Yet sacrifices were many - Earth Sphere's military forces were greatly weakened, even less fitting to face off against humanity's many enemies than before.

Yet a ray of light shines during the dark times. During the Divine Crusaders conflict, one squad performed better than all others - the Steel Dragon Battle Group, a small but mobile and highly-skilled force. Enough people in positions of power came to an agreement to create a similar organisation, based on the Steel Dragon Battle Group, and try to replicate its success.

Unity Group has been established. Not a part of any nation's military, it answers to the ESUN directly. Unity Group's goal is simple - gather the strongest, the brightest and the most talented. Together, participate in operations against any force that threatens humanity, be it external, or internal.

All is not lost. Unification begins.

Below is a list of game-important locations. The list will obviously grow in time, as new canons are introduced and plot progresses. This list includes Unity Group bases.

Unity Group base list
Fort Alhambra - United States
Sakihama Base - Japan
Star Rose - space
Macross - mobile

These bases are all equipped with TSEN (teleporters basically). Because of that, characters can easily interact and meet up in-person even if they are stationed in different bases.

Other, non-base locations equipped with TSEN
Shu Shirakawa's second hideout - Falkland Islands
Roger's mansion - Paradigm City

Time-Space Extension Nexus
Time-Space Extension Nexus, TSEN for short, is a very advanced technology that allows us to instantly move people, as well as large-scale machines and supplies from point A to point B. In other words, it's a two-way teleporter system. Individual TSEN units are extremely expensive and thus rare, but they are (surprisingly) reliable and easy to use once installed - at least as long as things are sent from one TSEN to another. Sending them to other points in space produces unreliable results and is usually not allowed.

TSEN units come in two varieties - personal and large-scale. Personal units are for transporting small groups of people and can be used virtually without limits, except for inherent difficulties of moving people around. Large-scale units are used to transport mecha and supplies in any significant qualities. They are power-hungry and the transport can be used only sporadically.

All Unity Group bases are equipped with TSEN, usually of both kinds. This will most definitely never become a plot point. Totally.

LOCATIONS LIST

Space

Star Rose (Unity Group base)
A large and heavily guarded space station. It houses military units but also a lot of civilians, with recreational faciliites, shopping centers and is overall surprisingly comfortable and a popular tourist destination (for people who can afford it).
Canon: Majestic Prince

Asia

The Haran Mansion
Banjou's home. Exactly what you'd expect from an insanely rich playboy with a giant robot in the basement. Not a Unity Group base, but guests are welcome to visit more often than not.
Canon: Daitarn 3

The Hong Kong Shatterdome
The last of Pan Pacific Defense Corps' shatterdomes, humongous bases that used to house dozens of Jaegers. Only three remain in this one, in addition to Gipsy Danger which was transferred to Unity Group.
Canon: Pacific Rim

Sakihama Base
An oldschool underground facility located in an undisclosed seaside Japanese city. It is secret - people outside Unity Group may be aware they have a base nearby, but not where exactly. Sakihama has a series of tunnels that provide convenient and fast access to other points of interest in Japan, though they may not necessarily go all the way. The base's cover is a cheap hotel, actually used by the personnel as quarters.
Canon: SRWU

North America

Autobot City
Built in Canadian wilderness, it's a city where autobots and humans can coexist in peace. It is still under construction, but already has a formidable defense mechanism - the city itself is actually a gigantic Transformer, Metroplex.
Canon: Transformers G1

Fort Alhambra
An old military base somewhere in a remote region of United States. It was used by the US for military technology testing before being given to Unity Group. Because of that, the surrounding area is full of testing grounds and places where mock battles used to take place years ago, but not anymore. Despite its age, the location is servicable and both humans and their machines can be stationed comfortably.
Canon: SRWU

Paradigm City
A retro-style city on the American coastline where everyone lost their memories 40 years ago. It remained cut off from the outside world for a long time - why and how is a mystery. The city has a population of humans as well as androids who are treated like second class citizens.
Canon: The Big O

Mobile locations

SDF Macross
An ancient alien spaceship that crashed on Earth in ancient times and was discovered several years ago. About 50 000 civilians live inside it, unable to leave because of UN Spacy's paperwork and fear that they discover military-grade secrets.
Canon: SDF Macross

Freeden
A Vulture (independent salvage specialist) landship captained by Jamil Neate. Its goal is actually to find Newtypes and protect them from abuse. As such its crew cooperates closely with Unity Group, though they are not members.
Canon: Gundam X

Other

La Gias
A world hidden under Earth's crust. It is a place where mysticism and technology exist side by side, and are used together to create elemental-powered machines. Three most powerful countries of La Gias are Langran, Shutedonias and Bargonia.
Our access to La Gias has been lost indefinitely, but the location entry remains for informative purposes.

Below is a list of game-important groups. This includes human organisations, both allied and hostile, as well as various beasts and aliens. The list will grow in time as canons are added and plot progresses.

NOTE: This is written from an in-character perspective, except for parts that player characters aren't supposed to know yet that are clearly marked as such. These organisations are NOT all common knowledge, especially the secret ones, though a member of Unity Group should have at least some idea what they are.

RAMPAGING MONSTERS
These creatures may be big or small, but usually they are very big, and very nasty. They are not sapient (though they may be sometimes be controlled by an evil overlord or mad scientist) and often leave a trail of destruction and animalistic fury wherever they go.

BETA
Swarming alien invaders with a hive-mind mentality. They come in many highly-specialized varieties, including anti-air lasers and melee combatants with ridiculously hard front armor. Their hives are rare, but are nigh impenetrable fortresses.
Canon: Muv Luv

Kaiju
Giant monsters that appear every so often from the Breach - a one-way rift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean floor. They deliberately target human cities on the coastline, always act alone but are notoriously hard to kill. Each Kaiju is different and has different abilities. Their blood, known as Kaiju Blue, is highly acidic and can severely contaminate the environment.
Canon: Pacific Rim

Noise
Strange creatures that have possibly plagued humanity for a long time, but appeared very infrequently. Their appearance intensified during the last years but statistically a person is expected to experience less than one Noise attack during their lifetime. Noise can shapeshift, slowly phase through solid matter, and turn unprotected humans into carbon just by touch. Unfortunately, most weapons seem ineffective against them so they are categorized as a natural disaster rather than humanity's enemy. After an influx of activity, Noise appearances dropped to previous, rare levels.
Canon: Symphogear

INVADING ALIENS
Organized threats to mankind that do not originate from Earth. The difference between aliens and monsters is that even if the latter have extraterrestial origins, the former are sapient (or at least seem to be) and have some kind of hierarchy or army. Still the lines can be sometimes blurred.

Anti-Earthling Party
Extremist group of Gebians (bug aliens who visited Earth a long time ago and were greatly inspired by ancient Egypt), focused on conquering Earth and enslaving it under Gebian rule. Unfortunately, most of their race supports them.
Canon: Swarms of Gods (OC)

Decepticons
Group of Transformers, robotic aliens from planet Cybertron, dedicated to conquering others and amassing power. Enemies of the Autobots.
Canon: Transformers

Kijin
Gigantic extra-dimensional humanoids, few in number but very powerful individually. They have waged a war against humanity in ancient past - but lost and were sealed away, reappearing only infrequently... until recently.
Canon: Hell's Embrace (OC)

Shura
Human-like aliens whose members value individual prowess and are highly trained in martial arts. Their presence on Earth is minimal and their current goal is unknown.
Canon: Super Robot Wars Compact 3

Wulgaru
Alien invaders that actively seek to push humanity's presence out of space via large scale warfare. Their vaguely biological units are not tough individually, but are very numerous and act in a coordinated army-like manner. They also wield powerful beam weaponry and some have energy shields. They are an offshoot of Protoculture and harvest other races related to them to prolong their failing lifespans.
Canon: Majestic Prince

Za Balmary Empire ("Aerogators")
Mysterious aliens who attack through the use of Cross Gates. They often have a nefarious purpose of abducting humans rather than killing them - this is because they are masters of creating clones, at least one of which has infiltrated Unity Group for a time (Ingram Plissken). They are human-like, suggesting a common ancestry. They have a habit of conquering other races and using their strongest soldiers as cloning material for their armies - and their eyes are on humanity now.
Canon: Super Robot Wars Original Generation

Zentradi
An aggressive alien race of giants. They have a strict military-like society and not much of a culture except for that. Their units are not impressive individually, but are very numerous. They are creations of an ancient race known as Protoculture (who are also humanity's distant ancestors), but rebelled against their own masters and now seek to destroy everything Protoculture-related.
Canon: Macross

HOSTILE HUMANS
Internal threats - groups of humans, sometimes small terrorist cells, sometimes whole nations, with goals that are mutually exclusive with our own. Many countries that are not members of Earth Sphere United Nations belong here, due to their less-than-enlightened self-interest or casual disregard for human rights.

Knights of Guiding Hand
A secret order that generally means well and is full of honorable and just people. They have a device known as Sidereal Tapestry that predicts the future, and one of its prophecies requires them to kill a young boy (Volya Alkaev). Because of that and Volya being under Unity Group's protection, they oppose us.
Canon: Dirge of Fate (OC)

New United Nations Earth

A rogue state that seeks to unite all of Earth under one world order. It is inspired by organisations that fought against the Space Revolutionary Army 15 years ago, but its influence is limited to more desolate regions of the planet. Not considered a legitimate government by most countries.
Canon: Gundam X

Vagans ("Unknown Enemy")
A group of humans who originate from an old colony on Mars, forgotten by almost everyone else. Their living conditions are poor and they blame the rest of humanity for it, and want to retake Earth - by force. They specialize in hit and run attacks, though their major strike force was defeated so it is not sure what their next course of action will be.
Canon: Gundam AGE

FRIENDLIES
These organisations are helpful, or at least non-hostile towards the Unity Group.

Autobots
Group of Transformers, robotic aliens from planet Cybertron, dedicated to peace and protection of other races (and themselves) from the evil Decepticons.
Canon: Transformers

Earth Sphere United Nations
An intergovernmental organisation created to promote cooperation between humanity's nations. As the name suggests, it consists of nations not only on Earth, but also in space - including colonies on Lagrange Points and the Moon. The organisation has only humanity's best interest in its mind but unfortunately not every country is a member. ESUN is not a "world government", member countries are still autonomous with their own governments.
Canon: SRWU

Global Defense Force
A coalition of several nations' space forces. Being an alliance of several organisations and not a single one, it is rife with internal politicking and struggles.
Canon: Majestic Prince

The Gloster Foundation
A secret organization dedicated to keeping the rogue Kijin in check. Their job became only more difficult in time, so they have decided to reveal themselves to and ally with the Unity Group.
Canon: Hell's Embrace (OC)

Graveyard/The Executors
An organisation dedicated to hunting down and fighting PRAYERs. A nebulous, secretive and generally untrustworthy group. They utilize Mistletoes - tiny fairy-like artificial beings that can synchronize with few chosen people and grant them abilities to fight PRAYERs effectively.
Canon: Hellsinker

Pan Pacific Defense Corps
An international alliance created to contain and combat Kaiju. Their weapon of choice are giant robots - Jaegers, housed and constructed in bases known as Shatterdomes. They are one of the first organisations to use mecha in combat, but they are currently in decline and only one of their Shatterdomes is operational.
Canon: Pacific Rim

Pro-Earthling Party
Group of Gebians believing that their race should coexist with humanity on equal terms and in peace. Unfortunately they are in the minority.
Canon: Swarms of Gods (OC)

Ravens' Nest
A paramilitary organisation that hires out mercenaries (called Ravens) and organizes Armored Core arena fights. Although it supposedly does not hire Ravens out to break any laws, Ravens' Nest works only as a mediator and does not regulate what a Raven can and cannot do. As a result it has a shady reputation. The discovery of truth behind the Nest's origins threw the organisation into chaos and disarray.
Canon: Armored Core

Solaris
A secret organisation that fought years ago to protect the world from various threats. It has since fallen financially but cooperates with the Unity Group to get back on its feet.
Canon: SolSavior (OC)

UN Spacy
The space military of ESUN, created for the explicit purpose of defending Earth from aliens. It controls the largest fleet in the Earth Sphere, though various countries have their own independent space forces.
Canon: Macross

Unity Group
Created by ESUN, it's an organisation not responding to any single country, established to defend humanity as a whole from threats external and internal. It has a loose structure and does not have a lot of military-like rigour, but somehow many one-of-a-kind pilots and machines are part of its ranks.
In short, it's us.
Canon: SRWU

DEFUNCT ORGANISATIONS
These organisations used to be around, but for one reason or another aren't anymore.

Divine Crusaders
A group established by Bian Zoldark with the purpose of uniting Earth under a common banner, to face and defeat alien invaders. Despite its noble goal it was hostile towards the Earth's governments who did not want to cooperate with it, and was eventually defeated. DC survivors often joined other military organisations, some even Unity Group.
Canon: SRW OG

Meganoids
Technically they are not aliens, but cyborgs created by a man - Souzou Haran, Banjou's father. Unfortunately they went rogue and homicidal, having killed everyone in the research station that was their birth place except Banjou himself. The Meganoid leadership was defeated and their base on Mars destroyed, and they are no longer a threat.
Canon: Daitarn 3

PRAYER
Mechanical monsters that appeared from Shafts - tower-like structures that could appear anywhere on Earth. PRAYERs wandered around randomly (mostly in unpopulated areas, luckily) and killed anything in their path. They specialized in bullet hell-style combat. If killed or the Shafts are destroyed, they were reborn, and rather quickly to that. With the destruction of the Cardinal Shaft, all other Shafts were merely reflections of, the PRAYERs are gone for good.
Canon: Hellsinker

United Colony Corps
A space colonies self-defense force that decided to unite with DC and thus were defeated along them. Following the defeat, UCC was disbanded and most of its personnel became parts of UN Spacy and other assorted organisations (such as the Unity Group).
Canon: SRW OG

United Nations Earth
An alliance of Earthbound countries that opposed SRA's rise to independence 15 years ago. The war between the two was interrupted by alien and monster invasions intensifying in scope, and subsequently UNE was disbanded, with NUNE as its pale imitator.
Canon: Gundam X

Space Revolutionary Army

Government created by a group of colonies that waged a war of independence against Earth 15 years ago. It steadily lost influence over the years and only some mobile suit designs remain as SRA's legacy.
Canon: Gundam X

The Lady's Good Men
Cult devoted to the Lady, whomever she may be. The Lady blesses them with gifts, and they are enemies of people who they perceive to "abuse" such boons. The Lady's gifts all originate from an ancient installation discovered by Professor Dupond (this includes TSEN which is a replication of technology found there), and the cult was created by Dupond's assistant Aaron Anso Antema. With its leadership slain or captured, the Lady's Good Men are no more.

Below is a list of which base is each character living in. They may also have off-base residency, in locations away from the bases but still close enough for regular interaction.

Thanks to TSEN teleporters, transport of people between each base is easy and mostly hassle-free, so just because your character is stationed in one base does not mean they cannot easily participate in events that happen in another one!

If you want to have your character's residency changed, please contact the mods. Residency outside of the official Unity Group bases is allowed, if it doesn't prevent the character from interacting with the rest of the game.

RESIDENCY LIST (massively outdated)

Application rules

  • Before you can post or comment in the game, your character must be app'ed and accepted. Applications are written as responses to this post.

  • Every potential player needs to read and understand the rules, which you can find here.

  • You may not app a character that is reserved (unless you are the one who reserved them of course) or taken.

  • You need to be familiar with the game's in-character background. It is a bit vague and malleable on purpose, to make introducing new canons easier. NOTE: If a canon is hard to incorporate into the setting but is otherwise perfectly app'able, ask the mods on how to join it into the game. We can work something out.

  • SRWU is a game that focuses on mecha canons, as well as mission-based combat where players cooperate together as members of one team. However, non-mecha canons are accepted if they still meet the following conditions:
    1. The canon fits into the game in terms of setting and themes. It is not a question of whether a canon "is /m/". There may be canons that contain a lot of mechanical or robot-like elements but their setting is too different from SRWU's to be easily integrated, or it would be hard to run them in a combat-heavy, misson-based game.

    2. Unless it's a non-combatant, the player character being app'ed must be able to handle mecha-sized enemies in a fight. If your character can technically take down a single giant robot after an epic struggle, then this condition is still not fulfilled - enemy grunts may cause some trouble, but your character should be able to take them down reliably as if they were, well, grunts.

    3. Similarly to point 2, enemies from the canon must be able to provide credible threat to giant robots piloted by player characters. If they are human-sized, this usually means having some sort of extraordinary abilities, advanced equipment, or being powerful non-human monsters. This must apply to most enemies in the canon - not just rare bosses, but run of the mill grunts as well.
If you are not sure if your canon passes or fails any of the above points, ask the mod team.

  • Player characters are all assumed to be, or eventually become, members of the Unity Group (or members of their own organisation that works closely together with the Unity Group). They are by no means forced to all be nice people, but are also at least nominally on one side, the good guys' side. If your character is an antagonist in canon (one that doesn't change sides), and in general the only reason they would be with Unity Group is "because they're a player character", then that character cannot be accepted into the game.

  • The mod team reserves the rights to reject an application not on the merits of the application itself, but because of the person who applies it. This is limited to individuals who are known to have a very negative or detrimental effect on the game as a whole, and are not welcome in SRWU. This is never a decision we make lightly and without consideration. If you are not sure if you are considered such an individual, contact the mod team.

  • Original characters have their own application rules. See below. These rules are in addition to normal application rules, not replacing them.

  • Should an application be rejected, we will provide reasons for doing so. An application may be resubmitted at any time, assuming issues we had with it have been fixed. Please do not abuse this by resending an application over and over with only minimal changes each time.

Original Character (OC) rules

General rules
  • There is no source material for an original character, so the background and personality sections need to be much more detailed than for a canon character. This is to ensure that a character is three-dimensional and makes sense. NOTE: more detailed does not necessarily mean extravagant. Low-key character backgrounds and personalities are welcome.

  • When picking a PB (Played By - a character who will serve as the basis for journal icons) for your OC, do not use a character from a show that can be normally app'ed into SRWU. If you are not sure if a show can be app'ed or not (and thus serves as a good source of PBs), ask the mods.

  • The sample post section must take the form of a post, or several meaningfully long threads, on [community profile] testrun_box or similar test run community. Multiple prompts are encouraged, to show us you have a good handle on the character's voice.

  • As a general rule, an original character must be well-written. A canon character's application is sent to show us the player knows the character in question and can play them competently. An original character's application has to show that, in addition, the character itself is interesting and adding the canon will enrich the game.
Rules for original characters from established canons (to give a theoretical example: an OC Gundam pilot from the Gundam Wing canon)
  • The established canon must actually be in the game before you can app an OC into it.

  • You need permission of all players currently playing characters from the canon before you can app an OC into the canon.

  • You are allowed to add your own events into the canon, especially if they are necessary for the character's introduction or development. However, these events may not overshadow the main canon events and (once again) require permission from all other players playing characters from the canon.

  • Your character's piloted unit (or units) or capabilities may not be used to "one up" canon characters. Examples include app'ing a late-show unit while the plot's canon is still early, app'ing a one of a kind special unit that already exists in canon (or its carbon copy), or being even better at something than a canon character who is already considered to be unique and the best at their field.
Rules for original characters who come with their own original canon
  • Canons that take the form of [something normally un-appable] BUT WITH GIANT ROBOTS are not allowed. Being inspired by something (in moderation) is acceptable, ripping it off wholesale and adding mecha is not.

  • Take into consideration other canons already in the game as well as the game's setting in general when writing your original canon. You are free to add new elements into the setting, but please exercise moderation and do not try to redefine the whole setting - having a shadowy race that secretely controls THE WHOLE WORLD (including other canons' groups) or something that allows millions of people to suddenly develop superpowers without any side effects are examples of doing it wrong.
As usual, if you have doubts whether your canon passes this rule or not - ask the mods.

  • The event list for the original canon must be finished and detailed. A degree of flexibility is welcome, but we must know all the important things that will happen during the canon's events.

  • Note for UG and UG@ veterans: these games are not in continuity with SRWU (or each other, but that's beyond the point). That means canons that are explicit continuations of canons from these games, or characters that are explicitly stated to be older versions/children/etc of UG/UG@ characters, will not be accepted. Such connections can be implied, but it must be vague.

Application template

IMPORTANT: An application does not have to be whole in one post or response. A player is allowed to split the application across several posts, for example because it's long and that way it is easier to read, or to make it easier for others to avoid spoilers.

Please read this for a description of what you are supposed to write in each section. Some sections are REQUIRED while others are OPTIONAL.

Following is an application template. After copying it and finishing each section, post the application as a comment to this page.
The suggested way of doing this is by writing the application as a post (or several posts, see the note above) on your own journal, then linking it in a comment on this page. This is for the ease of making edits in the application itself.

What is a mission?

Though there are exceptions, most posts on the in-character community are written during "downtime", when characters aren't in any distress and are just doing their own (sometimes plot-important, sometimes not) things. Where does all the mecha combat go then, which this mecha game is supposed to have a lot of?
Most combat happens on missions. Missions are pre-scheduled events during which we (players and at least one mission-running mod) gather together on AIM chatrooms and play out scenarios, almost always battle scenarios from one or more canons that are in the game.
Missions are always scheduled and have signups, though players may be able to participate even if they didn't sign up before if they happen to be online at the time and there is free space available. Mission scheduling, signup and lineup posts (as well as post-mission report posts) are handled by the mods and you can find them in the OOC community. Missions themselves are of course in-character, and all rules for in-character interaction apply.
You can expect around 2 missions each week. Sometimes more, sometimes (but not if we can help it) less.
Only active canons get missions. Each player is limited to having only two active LCW canons - the rest are inactive, that is their characters can still be around but they do not get any missions until they become active. There is no limit to how many non-LCW canons can be active.

AIM

The software we use for running missions and general OOC communication is AIM. An important thing to note here is that newer and older versions of AIM are not compatible. In order to participate in missions, use a legacy version of AIM - download link here. Alternatively, you may use another instant messenger compatible with AIM, such as Pidgin or Trillian.

The room name we use for OOC chat is usually "srwuooc". For IC missions, it's "srwumission#", where # is the mission number.

Guide to missions
  • Missions happen on AIM during pre-scheduled times. Each mission room is accompanied by an OOC room, which should be used for general OOC chatter and mission coordination. Please refrain from using the IC mission room for OOC banter.

  • During the mission, the mission-running mod is responsible for describing the situation to the players, as well as running enemies and other difficulties they face.

  • When not in combat, players are allowed to move freely and perform various actions without the mission runner prompting them to do so. When combat starts during a mission, the mission runner will provide a list of enemy targets and an initative order. In combat, players act when prompted to by the mission runner, in order of initiative. You are always free to perform minor actions such as talking, moving around a bit, reloading and similar actions that cannot influence the tides of battle, even without prompting.

  • When it is a player's turn to act, they should write an action describing how their character attacks the enemy, and which enemy is targetted. Non-attack actions are of course also allowed - the sky's the limit if you have a good idea on how to resolve the situation! Either way, it is suggested that you type out your action in advance, to save time.

  • Likewise, when a player is under attack, they will be prompted to react - write an action describing how they defend themselves, try to evade the attack or if they feel foolhardy, try to counter with an attack of their own!

  • The game doesn't have any mechanics per se and we don't roll dice during combat. What determines a character's performance is how their actions were written. A character that does something smart or really awesome (or really hilarious) will find that their action was really effective. On the other hand, if you do something really stupid then your unit may get damaged - especially when dealing with bosses, who are much more dangerous than normal grunts!
In general though, player characters will be reasonably effective during missions regardless of how weak or strong their units are theoretically supposed to be. There is nothing fun in one player's overpowered machine wiping out all enemies while others are locked into uselessness.

  • More of a guideline than a rule: During missions, the mission runner mod is often very busy and has no time to look at the OOC chat room. If you need to talk to them, do so directly over AIM instead!
The following special characters are used to indicate actions in the mission and let the mods know you want to do something:

* Type an * at the beginning of any post in which you are acting - performing an attack, defense or any other action when prompted to act or react, or performing a support. This is to help mods keep track of multi-line actions.
+ Type a + sign when you are finished with your action. Actions can be as many lines long as you feel you need to describe them.
& Type an & instead of a + sign when you want a reaction from your target before you continue with your action (to see if the first shot of a combo hit, for example). This is usually used when you want to trick your enemy, or unleash a combo that ends with a mighty finisher - please don't overuse this one, as doing it every other action may slow the mission to a halt!
# When someone else has been called for a react, type # to ask the mod for a turn call to support their reaction (take a hit for them, try to deflect the attack, or something similar) This is called a Defensive Support. When you Support someone that way, they still have to write a reaction of their own, but your support will (probably) make it much more effective.
@ When someone else has either had an action called for or finishes an action, type @ to ask the mod for a turn call to take an action in combination with theirs. This is called an Offensive Support, and usually is coordinated with the other player OOCly first to create a powerful combo attack.

Wingmen and Commanders - special rules

Wingmen are NPCs that accompany some player characters (those who stated so in the app) on missions, and have their own combat units. Rules for Wingmen are simple - if your character has them, you can incorporate their attacks into your actions' descriptions. Alternatively, you can choose to have only the Wingmen attack - and if the enemy responds, they will be the ones reacting as well! You are the one who writes the description either way of course.
Lastly, Wingmen may perform Supports in place of the player character, and can even Defensive Support them.
During some missions, NPCs will join the players' side, counting as temporary Wingmen of sorts for all players. These NPCs can be used for supports, both offensive and defensive. The mission runner will say something along the lines of "NPC available for supports" when this happens.

Player characters who are Commanders can have other player characters attack in their place when they have a prompt to attack. The other player has to give permission for this to happen, or the Commander can write an action where they want whomever wants to take the opportunity to follow the order and attack.
Either way, the action is described as the Commander describing how they come up with a plan for attack (or similar action) and then another character executing it (their player writing a follow up on the order, as if it was an Offensive Support). Such an action will be more effective than if the other character did it themselves without the Commander's order backing them up.
Many Commander-type characters use units that are not as powerful as others or even have no combat units of their own. This is a viable alternative that allows them to contribute to the battle and, if used smartly, turn the tides.

Missions vs event posts vs combat/situation logs

Missions are run via AIM, with a mission running mod, and almost exclusively focus on combat situations and important plot developments. Almost all missions happen on a giant robot scale, with appropriately sized threats or at least enemies powerful enough to be a challenge even for oversized mecha.

Event posts, on the other hand, are posted on the RP Community. They do not have scheduling or signup posts. They can be written by a player and without mod supervision, though you can request the mods to write the event post for you and/or control NPCs or otherwise supervise to promote fairness. But even if you intend to write an event post yourself, it is best to inform the mods beforehand to ensure the plot timing is right.
Event posts focus on non-combat events, or events that include on-foot non-mecha combat. Such fight scenes may also happen during missions, but that is rare. Event posts are not using mission-specific rules, with an initative order, supports, and such - just normal IC roleplaying rules. They do not make use of AIM, but you are free to coordinate with other players via AIM or any other means you can think of, to post faster for example.

In short, if it's a non-combat event, it should be handled via an event post. If it's a combat one using giant robots, it's probably a mission. If it's an on-foot combat event, it's probably an event post. Keep this in mind while writing your own list of events, and deciding which ones should be missions and which ones should be events! However there are always exceptions to the rule. If you are unsure if an event would be better handled by a mission or an event post, ask the mods for advice. Lastly, remember that there is a limited number of missions we can run (usually 2 per week), while a number of event posts is virtually unlimited.

Last thing that remains is combat or situation logs. These are written on the OOC community and describe what is going on in the game at the very moment - usually something dramatic, such as an enemy group attacking. When this happens, players who want to respond to the situation can write their own posts on the RP Community where they describe what their characters are doing. In case of enemies attacking (because that's how most combat logs will look like), that'd be an action post where the player character is fighting (in their unit or in rare cases on foot) and others are free to support them.
Combat/situation logs are not a part of a canon event list, though they may often accompany missions and events. They may also happen on their own, as a reminder that just because one canon had no missions for a while does not mean foes that originate from it are asleep and not acting against us.

Story arcs

Usually, missions happen on rotation - after one canon had a mission it does not have another for a while, to ensure fairness and that all active canons are represented in the game. However, sometimes canon events happen soon one after another, and it makes no sense (from either a dramatic or a realistic perspective) for us to wait several weeks or even months between them.
This is where arcs come in - if two or more missions are in an arc together, then they will be run close one after another. The suggested events list section of an application is where you note which missions are in an arc together - an arc may have between 1 and 4 missions (though single-mission arcs are the default and do not have to be mentioned at all), and as many event posts as you'd like.
Once an arc is over, the canon will have to wait for its turn to have a mission for a bit longer than usual. The longer the arc, the more the canon will have to wait.

Requests for upgrades go here. If you want one, respond to this post.

Note: upgrades that were already in an accepted application do not have to be written here, just make sure with the mods that it's okay to introduce them into the game before you do it.

Location upgrade requests - new bases

If you have a potential new base location in mind, write a location upgrade request. Following guidelines are in place:
  • It must be an already existing installation (in the game or in one of its canons), not something that will be built from scratch. Instead it will be modified to serve as a Unity Group base.

  • It must have important things or suspicious activity from hostile groups happening nearby. Read: events must happen in the suggested base's general location, preferably events from more than one canon.

  • Obviously, a similar Unity Group base cannot be too close nearby. Redundancy!

  • It's strongly encouraged that the location have something unusual or interesting that makes it different from other bases.
If a request is approved, the location will be equipped with standard Unity Group teleporters and will become another base for player characters, with all that entails.

Unit upgrades

The meat of this page, so to speak. The rules are simple - if you want an upgrade for your character, write it here, following guidelines from the Applications page. If your request is rejected, the mods will write a response telling you why. It may be because your character already received an upgrade recently or we feel what you have already is powerful or versatile enough. If that is the case, you will have to wait some time before the request can be accepted.

Cross-canon upgrades

A special case to consider is when upgrades come from a canon different than your own character's. In such a case, keep the following in mind:
  • Get permission from all players who have characters from the canon you are "borrowing" your upgrade from.

  • Cross-canon upgrades exist for flavor or roleplaying opportunities, not to engage in one-upping or cherry picking the best out of every canon. Because of that, a cross-canon upgrade cannot be stronger than units used in the canon the upgrade comes from. Nor can it be an upgrade to the extent that it replaces fully or mostly the unit's old abilities, rather than just enhancing them.

In short: Don't powergame, and don't use cross-canon upgrades as an opportunity to try to prove one canon's "superiority" over another.

NEW! Personal position upgrades

Player characters are allowed to apply for a position within Unity Group - by default they have rank of a normal Unity Group pilot/combatant, in addition to their canon rank in their own canon organisation (if they belong to one). If you want something more, well, this is what this section is for.
Any position below base commander is up for grabs. This is not about military-style ranks (Sergeant, Lieutenant, etc), what you apply for is an assignment within Unity Group: drill instructor, chief mechanic (or ordinary mechanic), janitor, cafeteria lady, commander's aide, whatever you feel is appropriate for your character.
The request will be approved or rejected depending on competence and trustworthiness of the character. If accepted, their extra tasks are assumed to be handled offscreen even if you do not post about them (because this is supposed to give you more roleplaying opportunities and not extra work). Do note that abuse of position will end with that position being taken away from the character.

If you want a particular position within Unity Group for your character, please tag this post with an ugprade request as usual.
