Mission 108 - Dive into the Truth

Recently, the signal from Master Albert's relay station was finally cracked. Not a lot of it. But enough for us to figure out what was its destination.

Which is here. A small tropical island in the Pacific, most of it taken by a semi-active volcano. On the base of the volcano there is a hidden, large blast door, not visible from long distance because of rocks and foliage providing cover.
You met no resistance yet. But this might change as soon as you get in. What lies beyond the door is unknown. Better get ready.

Dido ties a bandana around her head to keep the sweat away, then climbs in ShelLancer. "You've tangoed with these jokers a bunch, Ashe." She says. "What should we expect?"

As always, Kei was hard at work managing the instruments of Purple-2 to make sure there were no bad surprises in store for them behind the door. "Yes, anything you know about what might be coming?"

Ashe: Honestly, I got no idea. Albert's been /way/ too quiet lately. Whatever he's been planning these last months, he didn't want us to know.

"Let's go guys!" Huckebein Omega is doing a fist pump. Its pilot is Izuru, recovered and ready for further heroics.

The blast door is not locked, and all it takes is to open it. Beyond lie several chambers, hewn directly in the rock of the volcano, many of them partially reinforced with heavy steel girders and metal floors and walls made from thick blocks, some of them yellow or red in color.

Ashe: "But, hey, that works for me" the hunter smiles. "I also don't want to know what the heck he's thinking. I just wanna break whatever it is"

"At least we're taking the fight to him, rather than the other way around."

Volya: "...I guess that's something..."

There's a winding leading downstairs here, too. It includes a lift, but there's also the option of jumping down from platform to platform, for the impatient.

Purple-2...Doesn't actually react to the fistpump. What did you expect a robot with barely any moving parts to do? Kei, however, gives Izuru a small nod as he calls out for them to move in. "Or at least to this base, he might have more hidden."

Izuru: "Eh? The gates aren't locked?"

Purple Two's sensors detect no movement on this level. But the base's systems are working.

Kei: "Nothing's moving, so far, but the systems are on and there might be automated turrets or the like waiting for us. Or other static defenses."
Aldo
"So Ken, Mizuki!" Dido chirps. "Think we'll have to combine for this mission?"

Interitus: "Com...bine?"
Drascin
Ashe: "Yeah, traps and turrets are kinda a safe bet in this kind of place"

Mizuki: "If there's the need, we'll see.  But considering the usual size of Albert's forces..."
"... it may not be for the best."

Izuru: "Kinda sloppy for an evil genius to leave his lair wide open..." He sighs in his cockpit.

"Probably not wanna risk it. I mean, if its merely dormant, then being too rough could..." Ken shakes at the thought of drowning in magma.

[As for these two, Volya's currently on Interitus' shoulders, the latter not having felt the need to return to her larger form just yet.]

"Y'know," Dido says to Interitus, gesturing. "That whole "Save Our Sols!" Thing!"

Izuru: "Think it's a trap? Also man, it's warm in here."

Dido hisses. "Ooh, good point, there, Ken."

Ashe: "Probably, Izuru" Ashe doesn't seem particularly worried about it. "Or, well, Albert seems the kinda guy to trap everything just in case. So probably best if you guys let me go in first. I'm kind of harder to hit"

Dido nods. "That's right, Combine! Also known as Gattai!"
Drascin
Ashe transforms into Aeolus and begins floating down
Terra
Kei: "It might be one. Everyone, stay alert in case it is. And look out for overheating issues."
Jockey
Volya: "....Teritus. Promise me you'll change back before we go down there please."
Interitus: ".... Eeeeehhh"
[Volya has taken a hit to morale.]

Nothing attacks you as you descend down the vertical shaft. This is almost suspicious...

Izuru: "Are you... ah, wait, Ashe!"
The Huckebein chases after Aeolus!

But it doesn't take long to reach the bottom, where it turns into a wide, horizonal corridor, a part of it consisting of a steel girder built over a small pool of magma.
The rest of the chamber is covered with steel plating, and there's another blast door at the opposite end of it.
But, as soon as you reach this place, it becomes apparent you have company!

Model A: "You have to give it to Albert - he knows how to decorate a villain base. The bridge over the magma is a nice touch"

Like the Huckebein, Purple-2 doesn't stay behind either, floating down the shaft as its pilot keeps an eye out for anything unusual

A few large shapes emerge from the magma! At a first glance they look like monsters, but a closer look reveals there's a robotic head controlling each...

Izuru: "Got it... gah!" *The JURIA System is not present in the Huckebein to warn him, but Izuru notices the attack as soon as the turret appears on his monitor. The Huckebein performs a sudden sidestep, getting off the girder and flying above the lava.+

*Well, Ashe was already kind of expecting something to shoot at her, so at least it doesn't catch her unaware. Seeing the shots heading for her, she gives herself a sudden boost downwards and cuts her thrusters immediately afterwards, freefalling onto the bridge+

* The two turrets flanking everyone come under fire as the DuskBird's Abyss Gaze beams sweep over their positions!  "Keep an eye out in case of any others!"+

Ashe lands on the bridge, away from the beam shot by the turret, but now the three flame demons are looming over her!

*Dido frowns at the lava demons. "Yeah, they'd probably melt my Arc Thorns," she says, and turns towards the Barriodes. "Get spikes to the face!" ShelLancer launches a volley of Arc Thorns at the squarish robots, aiming for the crowns of their heads!+

Mizuki and Dido make quick work of the Barriodes, blowing them up before they get the opportunity to attack again. But while they do so, the Cannonwalkers approach from their back, firing a barrage of white energy balls! (react)

But hey, time to try her newest shape, she thinks as she runs straight at one of them - and suddenly turns into a certain short parka-wearing Robot Master and blasts the lava creature with a freezing barrage+

* "Dido, dodge!"  The DuskBird spins around, feathers flying off and energizing into floating wards of Void Energy as its eye lasers continue to go to work.+

The fiery robot monster gets frozen by Ashe's freeze attack (and that terrible pun), and it's incapable of moving at the moment! This might give you a good opportunity to shatter it... But before that can happen, another one rushes in, momentarily turning into something resembling a ball of magma flying in Ashe's direction and trying to bum-rush her! (react)

* "Mizuki, use the opportunity Ashe crated to shatter the frozen one before the heat thaws it out. The one charging Ashe created an opening for you here." A ping goes up for the abyssal. "Dido, support Mizuki by firing at these two cannon walkers to suppress them and prevent them from firing at her as she strikes at the frozen enemy." Two of the cannon walkers get pinged as well. +

*Yeah, mister ball of lava is not your friend, so Ashe is straight up going to jump sideways (never dodge an oncoming ball by running on its line!) and right off the bridge, changing into her flying shape before hitting the lava and pulling up!+

*When the lava demon charges, Izuru fires a concentrated blast of photonic energy from his magnum. "I'll cover for you!" Whether this stops the enemy in its tracks or not, he already throws the Fang Slasher away. It deploys its three blades and moves above the enemy, trying to cut into it as it passes by, with further small but fast shots of the photon magnum added in as suppression

*It was at this point Interitus dived down after the others, a simple glance all the warning Volya got before they went falling downwards. Quickly shifting her position in freefall to hold her partner from behind, her mighty wings burst free from her back and quickly folded around the pair. As they snapped open Interitus had returned to her larger
form and promptly let loose with a  palm blast at a cannon walker!+

Dido and Mizuki get grazed by a few shots from the barrage, but no direct hits (and those aren't the most powerful opponents out there) and it's nothing serious. Between Mizuki's eye beams and Ken running itnerference with his blades, two of the machines are destroyed.

*"Roger that, Kei!" Dido shouts. "Arc Thorns, launching!" ShelLancer bombards the Cannonwalkers, then raises its lance. "Lance Shock...Discharging!" A bolt of lightning hops from her lance and darts from Thorn to Thorn, spot-welding anything it passes through on the way!+

Ashe manages to get out of the way, also thanks to Izuru laying cover fire that grabs the demon's attention! The monster's body gets shredded but already starts to regenerate... But the attacks that hit its head deal heavy damage to it, making it stagger backwards!
The third fire demon tries to jump at the Huckebein and smash into it with both of its powerful fists. Fists that are also on fire. (react)

Two more Cannonwalkers are taken care of, one of them turned to ash by Interitus' blast, another one shorted out by Dido's electric attack. The two remaining ones focus target on Volya and his plant waifu, shooting several missiles at them! (react)

*The side binders move with a whoosh, making the unit move back. Izuru follows up on the evasive maneuver by flying backwards, low but not touching the lava... though the motion may make some of it splash around.+

*And so Aeolus is going to turn and spin on himself with that weightless grace of his before firing a powerful twister of lightning-charged wind at the creature's head as it lunges, aiming to damage it and push its rocky body back!+

*Interitus quickly draws her staff. Rather than what would have been the wiser move of blasting the missiles at range... she practically bats at them  in an attempt to knock them away!+

* As for the frozen mooks, the DuskBird's quick to follow-up on that too (shut up), its whip lashing out at the frozen mook!+

*"Hug at tree, blow up a Cannon-bot!" Dido rushes towards the Cannon-walkers in turtle mode, launches a star formation of Arc Thorns at the missiles, then zaps them with lightning so they form an electric net that detonates the missiles as they pass through!+

The magmatic fists get really close to the Huckebein! But just before they reach it, suddenly electric currents fly towards the fire devil's head, zapping it and leaving visible damage in it! The robot monster gets pushed back, its attack doing nothing.
Dido's electric net zaps most of the incoming missiles, bar one, which Interitus sends back to the sender! The missile deals mediocre damage to the Cannonwalker, letting Ken finish it off (together with its neighbor) in one strike! +

Dido whistles loudly at Ashe's lightning wind. "Oh man, Ashe! We need to do a combo with our powers sometime!"

Izuru: "Good save! Thanks, Ashe."

DuskBird's whip smashes into the frozen fire demon, leaving cracks in its surface and then shattering it into small pieces!

Volya: "That actually worked... How did that actually work?"
Drascin
Ashe: don't mention it. What else are friends for?

Izuru: "Must be... the power of friendship, Volya!"
Izuru: "... Seriously though, was it a good idea to bring Interitus to a super hot magma place?"

But then, the remaining two (damaged) lava demons regain their balance, and move in to the offense! They form a large wave of magma that comes rushing forward, trying to engulf several of your units! (Kei, Mizuki, Ken react!)
They reform back to their normal forms after this attack.

Ken: Move! *Ken makes an effort to leap away with the ScarleTiger. Sure, the machine was built to handle heat, but probably not that much!+

* Tons of magma coming was certainly something to take seriously, but...  "Burn as bright and you want, burn as hot as you want... fire and lava one day still grow cold."  The DuskBird's hand began to grow its signature uber-black, energy building up!  "Darkness will always triumph over it, in the future and  in the now!  ABYSS... SANCTION!"

*Ashe had circled too far away to help with that, but she can make sure the creatures don't have the option to do that again. So she blasts off in their direction, landing with a huge THUMP that bends the grid slightly before turning into Thetis and beginning to aggressively lay into one of the creatures' head with a spinning chain of ice-charged naginata strikes!+

The machine unleashes its own massive blast of Void energy to overwhelm and stop the lava!+

*"Watch out, you guys!" Didod shouts, transforming ShelLancer back to humanoid mode. "I hope this works–!" Dido scans the ground around incoming Magma in infrared, looking for a fault point. Then it drives its Lance into that point, and with a burst of lightning tries to create a crack in the rocky ground that'll act as a crude lava trench!+

* There's one easy direction to avoid lava in. Up. The second the wave of magma comes at her, Kei speeds up towards the roof of the cavern, strengthening her shield below to avert any magma reaching higher than expected. +

The wide-area attack turns out to be very tricky to avoid. Ken and Kei might not be able to do it completely...
But then the lava flow is stopped cold by a big burst of negative energy!

The magma demons try to overpower Mizuki's Abyss Sanction, with heat making DuskBird's hand glow red and cracks appearing on the enemies' faces...
But then the large crack caused by Dido causes a lot of the magma to be redirected away.

Volya: "That isn't going to go anywhere important right?"

This pushes the scales to your side! Ashe's ice-elemented attacks smash fiercely into one of the demons, breaking its head into several pieces and causing the rest of its body to splash around, no longer kept in one piece. The other one, more heavily damaged, is finished off by the Sanction.

Mizuki: "... And so much for that lot."

No more enemies are visible in this chamber. Kei detects nothing moving nearby, either.

Izuru: "We've done it!"

"Damn straight," Dido says passionately. She frowns. "I thought this Albert guy made robots. What's he doing with freaking elementals?"

Somehow, he suspects it's far from over yet, though...

Ashe: There were robots inside. How the heck he was making robot skeletons for lava, beats me

Ken: What kind of crazy metal would you need for that?

Interitus: "... Skeletons?"
Volya: "... Don't you start.."

Izuru: "There are very strong robots that do not melt even in lava! You don't know, for examlpe there is..."

Ashe: "Anyway, guys, time to head inside. Are these doors also open or do we have to knock?"

Kei: "We've done it for this room. There's probably more."

Volya: "... do you think they heard us get through those things?"

Mizuki: "Maybe."
"But whatever Albert has in  store  for us... we'll just have to be ready."

Ashe: "Don't worry, Mizuki. I was born ready"

Izuru: "Maybe there are hidden cameras around? Well... either way kinda too late to worry, now."

Ashe walks in as spearhead, keeping her eyes open for anything interesting

The DuskBird enters in, whip coiled and at the ready for attacking...

What lies beyond is a large room, one wall of which is covered almost entirely in cables and tubes. There are also two glass pods by that wall, ones one might use for maintenance on something small-sized. They are labelled.
The labels read "Prometheus" and "Pandora".
Each of the glass tubes has a clock next to it. A clock that seems to go only a few days at most.

Ashe: "...uh, guys? Give me a minute.- I think I want to take a look at this"
Aldo
Dido gulps. "I'm gonna take a guess and say there's monsters into those. That we maybe shouldn't wake up?"
Drascin
Ashe gets closer, reading the readouts. Yeah that's not really a long time.

The glass pods are empty, at the moment.
Terra
Kei: "...Or artificial people or whatever else a mad scientist might be up to."

Mizuki: "..."

Izuru: "Don't these names ring a bell to you?"

[Interitus is going to look at the empty pods in confusion.]

Kei: "They're Greek, right?"

Ashe: "...what do you think these are? These are for Prometheus and Pandora. Did he build them here? But then why the clocks?
Ashe: "No, silly. They're those two minions Albert had. You know, the crazy guy with the laser scythe and the creepy girl with the weird helmet?"
Aldo
Dido glances at Duskbird. "Are you okay, Mizuki?" She switches to a private channel. "Is...this hitting a little close to home?"

???: "Well, would you look at this. It appears you've found out my little secret!"
Terra
Kei: "I'd forgotten. We've met so many crazy and creepy people that they start to blend together."

A nearby screen lights up!

Mizuki: "It's fine.  It's more just seeing the whole scope of-"

Ashe: ...and these look like they get a lot of use. So they must come here often-

Albert: "Prometheus and Pandora work for me, yes. You figured that out from the start. They're not very loyal minions, though... Even with the incentive I provide for them, to make sure they stay at my side, they're still nowhere to be seen around right now. I wonder where they went?"

Kei: "...That's exactly what it is."

Albert: "But no matter. Even without them, I already have a welcome commitee ready for you."

Ashe: Send anything you like, Albert! I'll take them out, and then I'm coming for you!

And indeed, doors in the walls start to open, revealing a swarm of robots moving in from all directions!

In addition to the human-sized familiar Galleons, there are also robotic dragons, robotic snakes, and... construction vehicles piloted by Galleons?

Ashe: Mostly I just shoot them until they die!

*The Huckebein stands its ground and fires a barrage of shots at the Galleons, a series of explosions bound to disrupt their ranks!+

*Well that's one way of doing things, Interitus sweeps her hands forwards as beams lash out from her fingertips, weaving through the air in wild patterns before seeking to strike at a Crushpactor's weapons!+

* "We need to establish proper facing to avoid being surrounded. The swarm is closest in this area," one part of it gets highlighted on everybody's screen. "If Ken jumps into it, he can scatter the galleons in the region and drive those that survive to the sides to give us an opening to fall back and close our ranks. Dido, I need you to shoot at the dragon among them to drive it back and...
...secure that opening." +

Almost a dozen of the small robots are blown up in the barrage fired by Izuru. But, as he's busy shooting, suddenly several more turrets emerge from the wall behind you! Three of them open fire at the Huckebein! (react)

Interitus has to brace against the floor, the blast having a surprising amount of punch to it. But she manages to hold, and keep herself, and Volya, safe.

Giga Aspis turns out to have very thick body armor - but not so much as far as the head is concerned! Thanks to rapid stabbing, shrapneling and zapping, you manage to blow up its face and knock the serpent body down to the ground. ShelLancer is pretty heavily damaged, however.

he DuskBird dove towards the ScarleTiger, which in turn charged at the ShelLancer. In a flash the machines began to transform, the two gigantic legs extending from the Lancer's shell as the side opposite of it opened up and swung down, forming hips. The ScarleTiger -now forming an incomplete torso with a right arm- connected with the white machine. The contrasting colors mixed and flowed; red, orange, and white arranged perfectly.
 
And lastly the DuskBird docked with the ScarleTiger's back, nearly its entire form now that of a black arm radiating malevolence. From the combined machine's back the DuskBird's six wings unfurled, displaying their full size and granduer, and a white head framed in a black, avian helmet rose up from the robot's body. It punched out with one fist, its eyes flashing violet and gold as the entire frame shifted to pure black...
